LAHORE – Pakistan’s former fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar has pitched an idea to utilize the cricket for a noble cause at a time when countries in the world are facing coronavirus pandemic.
The legend cricketer has called for organizing a three-match series between Pakistan and India, known as arch-rival in the cricket game, to raise funds to assist the people of both developing countries in the difficult times. “I want cricket series between Pakistan and India without a crowd,” he said on his YouTube channel, adding that there will be no broadcasting issues for the series. The match, which is taken as one of the most favourite contests in the cricket world, will draw the attention of millions of viewers staying at home due to the disease across the globe.
“Look at the number of funds these matches will generate. How many companies will invest in it and they will carry out philanthropy work through it as well.” “Why don’t the two countries raise Rs200-300 million through the matches?” he questioned, adding that the amount can be shared equally between Pakistan and India. He highlighted that the teams can win the hearts of the public with this philanthropy act, adding that losing the fixtures by a team will not matter.
He also sees the suggested series as a breakthrough in relationships between the two countries, which are confronting each other for long. If it happens, it would be most viewed cricketing matches in history, he said.
